ATLANTA — The number of robocalls Americans receive is staggering. It's something we've all dealt with -- some of us, several times a day.

March set a new monthly record for robocalls in the United States, with 5.23 billion calls. That's nearly 2,000 calls per second, according to a new study by the YouMail Robocall Index.

According to the study, nearly 50% of those calls were scams, including health insurance scams and student loan scams.

And the city with the most robocalls? Atlanta.

Last month, more than 200 million robocalls were made to Atlanta phone numbers, with the highest number of calls going to numbers in the 404 area code.

"Do you find the Do Not Call Registry effective at all?" Channel 2 anchor Craig Lucie asked college student Jazmine Simpson.

"No, not at all," she said.

On Tuesday, Lucie spoke with Alex Quilici, the CEO of YouMail, an app designed to block robocalls. Quilici said there are three things you need to do to avoid getting robocalls:

  1. Don't answer calls from unknown numbers.
  2. Get robocall blocking apps on your phone.
  3. Don't call back the number that called you.
