Metro Atlanta woman injured in New Zealand volcano eruption dies

A woman from metro Atlanta is the latest victim to die from a volcanic eruption in New Zealand.

Earlier this month, Channel 2 Action News reported that a DeKalb County couple was touring White Island when the volcano erupted. Pratap and Mayuari Singh, who live in Stone Mountain, were visiting the island from their cruise ship. Their three children and Mayuari’s mother stayed on the ship and were not injured in the eruption.

Pratap and Mayuari were badly burned. Mayuari Singh died in a New Zealand hospital Sunday, according to ABC News.

Those closest to the family told Channel 2 Action News that Singh is listed as stable. The couple owned several businesses and devoted much of their time to charity work.

“She’s been religious since the day I met her she never let the pressures of society steer her away from her faith and through her faith she grew up to be a wonderful person who just helps other people,” said friend Chelli Flores.

Pratap Singh has burns on almost half his body.

Close friends said there will be a special prayer held for her and the family this Sunday at the Atlanta Vedic temple in Lilburn.

Mayuari Singh is the 19th person to die.
