A witness at the scene told Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach that they had just spoken with the woman who was killed.
The witness said the woman had just left the parking lot of a shopping center nearby when the driver went through the fence along Ralph David Abernathy and fell on the Atlanta BeltLine below.
Dozens of witnesses were in shock at the tragic accident they had just seen.
“The lady, she just had an innocent accident and accidents happen to everybody,” said Mann Waller, who saw the accident. “This could have been avoided.”
Many say that her death could have been avoided if only a stronger railing had been in place. Waller says the old iron railing has been in place since the BeltLine was an old rail line.
“It’s definitely tragic. It’s too many people losing their lives due to our infrastructure,” he said.
No one else was injured in the wreck. The woman’s name has not been released.
Investigators are still working to determine why the car went off the road.
