Police responded to reports of a shooting at 1634 Hollywood Road, which is the address of the Reserve at Hollywood apartments.

The teen has been identified as Maurice Weems.

Crime scene tape was strung up around the parking lot and there were at least five Atlanta police vehicles at the scene.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington was at the complex Thursday, where police said they are still searching for the shooter nearly 24 hours later.

A small memorial of flowers was growing for Weems where he was shot.

It’s still unclear what led up to the shooting.

Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond said police briefed him on the case.

“It’s disturbing. A young person. 16 years old,” Bond said. “The question is, why? Why does this continue to happen in that particular area?”

People at the apartment complex didn’t want to talk on camera because they were scared of retaliation. But they said crime is commonplace at the complex.

In September, a shoot-out between two men left one dead and another injured.

“We do believe there were multiple guns involved,” Maj. Peter Malecki said of that shooting.

Over Memorial Day weekend, police arrested a 61-year-old woman for stabbing another woman at the apartments. In June, police found a person shot dead behind a building.

Bond said police need the community to get involved and call in tips to help make the area safer.

“They can better solve crimes in partnership with the neighborhood itself,” Bond said.
