Arrest made in shootout that caught mail carrier in crossfire

ATLANTA — Police have finally made an arrest after a beloved mail carrier was hit by gunfire in the middle of a shootout last month.

Channel 2 was in northwest Atlanta last month, where neighbors demanded justice for their favorite mail carrier.

The suspected shooter is being held here without bond and is facing numerous felony charges.

Nellie Jones, known to everyone as Miss Nellie, is continuing to recover after she and another man got caught in the crossfire of a shootout while she was on the job.

Earlier this month, police arrested and charged Jaquon Fields, the suspected shooter.

Channel 2 searched his criminal history and found that he’s had multiple arrests since 2020.

Court records show that nearly three months before the alleged shooting, Fields was arrested on one count of entering an automobile with intent to commit theft or felony. He bonded out of jail on September 22.

On Tuesday, Channel 2′s Michael Seiden spoke by phone with Miss Nellie. She told him that she is grateful for all the prayers and support she’s received from the community

Miss Nellie said that she hasn’t decided if she will return yet. She is just focused on her recovery.
