10-year-old Atlanta boy shot while he was sleeping, police say

ATLANTA — A 10-year-old boy was shot while he was sleeping early Tuesday morning, according to Atlanta police.

Police were dispatched to Washington Street in southeast Atlanta at around 4 a.m. When they arrived, officers learned one of shots fired from the street hit the boy in the right hand.

Police said the boy’s injuries are not life-threatening. A suspect has not been detained, according to police.

Police told Mims that the home was “absolutely targeted,” although, it’s unclear exactly why the home was targeted.

Several adults and other children were also inside the home at the time of the shooting.

The boy went to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Community leaders told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that they want to help the child and his family.

“We’re going to try to reach out to the family and see what we can do and go around the neighborhood and see what we can do and also try to get a closeness so we can try to stop some of this violence going on,” said Anthony Johnson, a deacon from Central Holiness Church.
