WASHINGTON D.C. — The tradition of a World Series champion visiting the White House goes back to 1865 when the Washington Nationals and the Brooklyn Atlantics were honored by President Andrew Johnson.

Nearly a century later, the reigning World Series Champions, the Atlanta Braves, were invited to the White House by President Joe Biden.
On Monday, President Biden walked into the East Room with Braves Chairman and CEO Terry McGuirk.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who now is a senior advisor to the President for Public Engagement, was in the front row along with Atlanta’s current mayor, Andre Dickens.
President Biden congratulated the Braves for the improbable run, from being below .500 in August, to winning their first World Series title since 1995.
The 1995 World Series team did visit the White House, where Tom Glavine gave a jersey to then-President Bill Clinton. Braves players told Channel 2′s Zach Klein they hope it won’t be another 26 years before this franchise gets another invitation to the White House.
