Authorities have not said how long the event is expected to last.

APD holds active shooting training frequently, but this is the first event that is taking place after the active shooter in midtown.

On May 3, police said 24-year-old Deion Patterson opened fire in the waiting room of a Northside Hospital medical office, killing one woman and wounding four others.

This was the second mass shooting in midtown in less than a year. Two people were killed in August of 2022 when a woman opened fire in a condo building on West Peachtree. That shooting was motivated by a dispute with the condo’s board.

While the exercise is underway, Oakland Avenue will be shut down to allow emergency vehicle parking.
