Atlanta native Marquis Grissom remembers catching the final out of the ‘95 World Series

ATLANTA — It was a fitting end to the Braves 1995 World Series in Atlanta: A local player caught the final out of Game 6, securing the win in front of a hometown crowd.

Marquis Grissom, then 28, was in his first season with the Braves when he caught a fly ball popped up into the outfield by the Cleveland Indians Carlos Baerga, securing the Braves’ victory.

“In to the air, to left center. It’s Grissom! He’s got it!” the announcer said. “And the Atlanta Braves are the champions of the world!”

Grissom was the only player on the team at the time who was born and raised in Atlanta.

Grissom said he wasn’t even nervous on the play.

“I was just waiting on the ball to come down,” Grissom said. “Seemed like it took forever though.”

“And then all of a sudden they got on a roll and started playing well,” Grissom said. “That’s the kind of energy this town has gotten from this team. All year long. And when you get that kind of energy, then it tends to turn over and everybody’s on board. And now, here we are in the World Series.”
