Atlanta officer spends hazard pay on tablets for neighborhood students

Frontline workers and public safety officials have been heroes throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Many local governments have passed hazard pay policies to recognize their extra efforts, including the City of Atlanta.

Rather than use his hazard pay for himself, one Atlanta police officer wanted to give it back to children in his community.

Atlanta Police Zone 3 Investigator Keith Backmon purchased and donated Amazon Fire tablets to help five kids at an apartment complex complete their school work.

“As a public servant, it’s my job to give back to the community,” said Backmon, who has been with the department for 16 years.

Backmon works as a part-time security officer at the Villas at Lakewood Apartments. He also made a $30 donation toward internet connection.

The Atlanta officer hopes his donations will be of great help to the children with their school work. Here’s the moment he surprised them with tablets:
