2 teens accused of stealing truck, shooting at Atlanta police before crashing into building

ATLANTA — Two 16-year-olds are spending time at the Metro Youth Detention Facility after police said they stole a truck, shot at police while trying to escape them. Atlanta police said the two stole the truck on Whitehall Ave. Nov. 10.

The incident ended quickly when they drove the stolen Chevy Silverado into a vacant building.

Atlanta police posted video of the incident on their Facebook page. It showed the teens in the parking lot, in the truck as police arrived around 2 p.m.

Police said the two teens were in the still in the truck, in the parking lot of the auto parts store when they spotted officers arriving and sped away. They crashed into the front of one of the marked patrol vehicles and the passenger in the truck shot at officers.

The pursuit lasted roughly two blocks before police said the two teens crashed into the vacant building at 804 Cascade Ave.

Police said a number of officers converged on the scene and found the two 16-year-olds trying to hide on top of a commercial refrigerator unit inside the empty building. The two were taken into custody without incident.

They also found the gun that was used to shoot at officers near the refrigerator unit. The handgun had been reported stolen to the City of South Fulton Police Department.

Atlanta police said none of their officers fired at the two teens. They said both 16-year-olds had minor injuries from the truck crashing into the building.

The 16-year-old driving the truck was charged with two counts of aggravated assault against police, felony obstruction, theft by receiving stolen auto, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, hit and run, interference with government property and multiple traffic charges.

The 16-year-old passenger was wanted by East Point police for aggravated assault. Atlanta police charged him with aggravated assault against police, possession of a firearm by a person under 18, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, obstruction, theft by receiving stolen firearm and reckless conduct.
