Atlanta Public Schools Board meets, does not address superintendent contract

ATLANTA — Last week, Dr. Lisa Herring, the superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, announced she’d be out of a job in a year.

The school board said they were not going to renew her contract in 2024.

At Monday’s school board meeting, the first since the announcement, the superintendent contract was not on the agenda, or mentioned.

Channel 2′s Elizabeth Rawlins spoke to the president of Georgia’s Teacher Federation about the non-renewal.

“I hate to lose her but she’s put up with enough foolishness,” Verdailla Turner, Georgia Teacher’s Federation president, said.

Turner told Rawlins that the issue is with the school board, not the superintendent.

“They can’t seem to hold to a superintendent,” Turner told Channel 2 Action News. “Some of these people have been there for 10 years and instead of a new superintendent, we need a whole new board within Atlanta Public Schools.”

In a statement sent to Channel 2 Action News, Herring said her last performance evaluation was in December, and she’d gotten “satisfactory feedback with emphasis on the focus of additional engagement and stronger communication efforts.”

Despite the lack of renewal, Herring is still a whole year ahead of losing the job.

“I expect her to be quiet and just do the day-to-day,” Turner told Rawlins.

Channel 2 Action News is still working to get a response from the APS board.
