ATLANTA — Parents and students can expect to see more officers in some area schools, as Atlanta Public Schools police continue to fight rising crime numbers.

The department announced this as it held a ceremony Tuesday in downtown Atlanta.
APS police promoted nearly one dozen officers to the rank of corporal.
It’s part of the department’s plan to grow the force to 106 officers, including gang intelligence officers.

“As a school system, it’s important that our school environment know that they are protected well, and that we have leaders who are deeply invested in our security and our protection,” APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring said.
APS police chief, Ronald Applin said corporals are new positions for the district.
They’ll supervise new officers and improve reporting.
