ATLANTA — Atlanta United says they broke a world record at their match Saturday night.
40,116 people were in attendance to see the team defeat CF Montreal, marking what they say is the largest crowd for a soccer match in the world since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The match looked as though it would end in a draw, but Atlanta scored a goal at the tail end of the game and took home the win.
Noting the number of people at the game after the match, head coach Gabriel Henize was quoted saying, “It’s beautiful to see so many people in the stadium. It’s been a long time without seeing this. And football is for people. I’m very happy because for the players, they gave everything to get this win.”
