Atlanta West End Mall redevelopment moves forward, tenants being moved ahead of construction

ATLANTA — Atlanta’s West End Mall is moving forward with redevelopment and is expected to close by the end of the month.

The 12-acre location was purchased at the end of September, with the city announcing it would be redeveloped into a mixed-use project featuring both affordable housing and commercial space in a $450 million project.

“This is a long-awaited new era for the West End. This is not just a redevelopment of the Mall West End—this is fulfilling a commitment to a community,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said when the purchase was announced. “Our Administration is dedicated to creating affordable housing and vibrant business spaces that respect and preserve the rich legacy of this historic neighborhood. Together with our partners, we will work to ensure the heart and soul of the West End continues to thrive under our stewardship.”

According to developers BRP Companies and the Prusik Group, construction means several things, and one of those is a temporary move for “legacy tenants” during the redevelopment.

“We remain committed to fostering an open, ongoing dialogue with the community, ensuring their voices are not only heard, but play an integral role within each step of the project,” said Meredith Marshall, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of BRP Companies.

While construction is underway, “several long-standing mall tenants will be relocated to a temporary on-site space at 850 Oak Street, allowing them to continue serving the community through the project’s entirety.”

Those tenants include:

  • The Burning Sands
  • Dendera Cosmetics
  • True Hair
  • American Deli

“We understand the deep bond between the West End community and the businesses that have called this place home for years, and we’re inherently committed to maintaining the legacy of these businesses while we create this dynamic new destination,” said Andrew Katz, principal of The Prusik Group.

As part of the redevelopment process, and their commitment to maintaining the atmosphere of the community while the West End Mall becomes One West End, BRP and Prusik will be launching a month-long campaign to preserve memories of the mall from the community.

“Through a digital time capsule, residents and visitors can share photos, videos, and stories that highlight the mall’s role in their lives. These submissions will be incorporated into One West End’s design, ensuring the new development reflects the history of the neighborhood,” the two companies said in a statement.

Submissions for the digital time capsule can be shared on social media with the #OWELegacy hashtag or they can be emailed in.

The multimillion project, when completed, will be 125,000 square feet of retail space, including a grocery store, fitness center, multiple dining options and several local boutiques.

Additionally, there are expected to be about 900 mixed-income residences with units set as affordable to those warning between 50% and 80% of the area median income in Atlanta. The development will also include student housing, a 150-key hotel and 12,000 square feet of medical offices.

The developers said Planet Fitness will remain in its current space during the first part of the project.

The first phase of redevelopment is currently expected to finish up in 2028, two years longer than the initial expectation.
