Thousands of mourners paid their respects to President Carter over several days at the Carter Center before he traveled to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state.
After 7 a.m. today, a departure ceremony will be held at the Capitol and his remains will then go to the National Funeral Service at Washington National Cathedral.
His remains will then travel from Joint Base Andres to Georgia’s Lawson Army Airfield at Fort Moore.
A private family service will be held this afternoon at Maranatha Baptist Church, followed by a procession through downtown Plains.
The public is invited to line the motorcade route through Plains to his final resting place at the Carters’ family home next to his late wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.
