CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Teacher sent to hospital after student assault

ATLANTA — Atlanta school police are investigating after video posted to Instagram shows a student assaulting a teacher inside a classroom.

It happened Monday at Frederick Douglass High School.

School police said the teacher was trying to prevent the ninth grade student from starting a fight with another student, when the student began to punch the teacher repeatedly in the head.

Within seconds, staff members were able to separate the student from the teacher and stop the assault.

The student was arrested and charged with assault. The teacher ended up at the hospital, suffering minor injuries.

In a statement, Atlanta Public Schools said, "safety and security of students and staff is a top priority in APS."

Both students involved in the initial altercation will face discipline in line with the APS code of student conduct.

The district said the teacher is recovering after being released from the hospital.
