ATLANTA — Chick-Fil-A confirmed to Channel 2 Action News on Monday that it is planning on taking its legendary crispy chicken breast sandwich overseas.

The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal over the weekend that it planned on opening restaurants in Europe and Asia by 2026, with plans to open in five international markets by 2030.

“We feel like it’s time to continue to innovate and try and test how we will do in international markets so that we can learn,” CEO Andrew Cathy told the newspaper.

The Wall Street Journal said Chick-fil-A’s “U.S. sales have quadrupled in the past decade, with its restaurants averaging more yearly sales than any other fast-food chain and many sit-down ones.”

Cathy told the newspaper that it is still trying to determine how many international restaurants will eventually open but said it “is planning to stick with its model in which franchisees run just one restaurant, working closely with the company and splitting profit with the chain after paying fees.”

The company has locations that opened in Canada, with the first opening in Toronto in 2019.

The Journal said the company also attempted open restaurants in South Africa in 1996, but that ended in 2001 after not being able to build enough awareness of its brand there.

“A U.K. location opened in a mall in a borough west of London in 2019 drew opposition from local gay-rights advocates. It closed several months later,” the paper reported.

Chick-fil-A told the newspaper they expect the new international location to serve chicken sandwiches, waffle fries, and milkshakes.
