Fire under bridge shuts down busy road for hours in Lindbergh area of Atlanta

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Fire Department said the southbound lanes of Piedmont Road were shut down in the Lindbergh area for a few hours after a fire started underneath a bridge.

The fire started around 8:30 p.m. underneath the bridge, which is near that intersection.

Just before 11 p.m., Piedmont Road near Garson Drive was reopened and cars were allowed to cross the bridge.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews inspected the structural integrity of the bridge after firefighters were able to put out the flames.

Fire officials are still working to learn how the fire began.

This area is no stranger to bridge fires. This marks the third fire beneath a bridge in the area since August.

A bridge on Cheshire Bridge Road has still not reopened after a fire several months ago.

A spokesperson for Atlanta Fire Rescue says similar fires in the past started in homeless camps underneath the bridges, but they have not commented on if that was the case Wednesday night.

No injuries were reported in the fire.
