ATLANTA — There’s extra time to apply for health insurance through Georgia’s Health Insurance Exchange, Georgia Access, but the deadline is coming up.
State officials extended the deadline for residents to apply for Affordable Care Act insurance plans, popularly known as ‘Obamacare,’ until Dec. 20, due to the impacts of hurricanes in the state of Georgia this year and the rollout of a new health portal.
“Open Enrollment is the optimal time for Georgians to explore affordable options for health coverage,” said Commissioner King.

The Georgia Access insurance portal officially opened for use on Nov. 1, replacing the federally operated Healthcare.gov site.
“At the heart of everything we do, we put consumers first. In the final analysis our goal is to offer health care enrollment that is easy, convenient and affordable and to offer every opportunity to increase enrollment of uninsured residents in Georgia” Cheryl Gardner, Georgia Access Executive Director, said in a statement.
Coverage through plans on Georgia Access take effect on Jan. 1, 2025. If you enroll after the Dec. 20 deadline, coverage will begin Feb. 1, 2025, according to officials.
