ATLANTA — Georgia Power is warning customers that scammers are posing as the company online, on the phone, and even door-to-door.
“We will not get offended if you hang up on us and call Georgia Power back just to make sure that you are safe and make sure that you’re getting the right information,” said Georgia Power spokesman Matthew Kent.
Georgia Power told Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray that it has been receiving reports of digital ads and Google results leading customers looking to pay their bills to fake websites that even look like Georgia Power with an illegally used logo but are really after your money or financial information.
There are also concerns with scammers calling customers threatening power disconnection “unless immediate payment is made.”
That is something Georgia Power said it would never do.

The company says in a statement:
“If an account becomes past due, Georgia Power will contact the customer via a pre-recorded message to the primary account telephone number or by letter requesting that the customer call the number on their bill to discuss the account. Georgia Power’s pre-recorded message will not ask customers to remain on the line or press a number to speak to a representative immediately.”
“The biggest thing is we will never ask directly for money on the phone or through a text,” Kent said.
The company reminds customers that Georgia Power:
- Does not call to ask a customer to provide a credit card or pre-paid debit card number over the phone.
- Does not accept cryptocurrency as a payment option. Scammers often demand Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, or demand use of money transfer apps for immediate payments.
- Does not call customers to set up automatic payments, to “update” credit cards or other sensitive account information or to ask customers to “pay for a new meter.”
- The company also does not send employees into the field to collect payment in person or to pay anywhere other than an Authorized Payment Location.
