ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Health reported more than 25,000 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, far surpassing the previous record of daily cases.
The state reported a total of 25,265 combined PCR and antigen-confirmed cases. Georgia has seen more new cases of COVID-19 in the past three days than in the entire month of November.

The positivity rate is also soaring in Georgia, with a daily rate of 38% Thursday.

The state reported 49 new deaths.
The explosion of cases comes as the omicron variant of COVID-19 spreads throughout the state. Only 60% of Georgians are fully vaccinated against the virus and only about 30% of the population has gotten a booster shot.

The Georgia Department of Health announced Thursday that they had allocated Merck and Pfizer oral antiviral treatments to some federal pharmacy partners.
A total of 1,620 Paxlovid pills and 7,500 Molnupiravir pills are in the first shipment of doses.
The DPH said that the best way to prevent a severe case of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated.
