Georgia seeing some increase in vaccinations as Delta variant spreads

ATLANTA — More Georgians are getting vaccinated this week than at the same time a month ago.

We’re digging deeper into statewide vaccination numbers with the rise in COVID-19 cases and the Delta variant.

Vaccinations are not going up dramatically day by day.

But when we looked at the long term, we found that Georgia administered about 60% more vaccines in the past 7 days compared to the same time period one month ago.

The numbers have essentially been steady the past seven days compared to the previous seven days, even a little lower. 139,900 doses this week compared to 143,577 the week before. Both those numbers are better than the pace one month ago when Georgia administered 88,768 in a the same seven-day period.

Overall, 47% of Georgians have received one dose and 41% are fully vaccinated.

But those numbers aren’t even across the state.

The percentages are highest in Metro Atlanta and lower in more rural parts of the state.

Ashley Deverell is immunization coordinator for the six-county North Georgia Health District where many of the counties lag the statewide numbers.

She says they have seen an uptick in recent days, particularly in their more rural counties.

“We’ve had probably a three-fold increase in the last week or so, because we were not doing very many per week at all earlier this summer,” Deverell said.
