ATLANTA — At least 100 people died of COVID-19 in a 24-hour period Jan. 9, marking the highest single-day death toll from the new coronavirus since August.
At least 10,280 people have died of the coronavirus in Georgia since the pandemic began last March. Another 1,177 are believed to have died from the virus.
The last time that single-day death tolls reached the hundreds was back in August of 2020.

The highest death toll in a single day in Georgia was 129 on August 11. The other days with the single-day highest death toll were:
August 12: 106
August 29: 104
August 25: 103
September 1: 103
Georgia is in the midst of a serious spike in the virus. Friday saw the highest number of new confirmed cases with 10,392 reported.
