ATLANTA — Airports are making adjustments and airlines are delaying or canceling flights due to the extreme winter weather in Georgia.
So, if your flight’s been canceled or delayed, and you have to change plans, what are your options?
Well, you have several, thanks to new rules by the U.S. Department of Transportation to give passengers more opportunities if they have issues with travel.
The new travel rules are a boon to passengers and other travelers, with easier ways to get refunds for flights that don’t take off or get delayed.

Here are your options:
- If your flight is significantly delayed or canceled, you can get an automatic refund without having to request it.
- If your bags go missing or aren’t returned within 12 hours of a domestic flight, you can get a refund on checked baggage fees.
- If you paid for in-flight services like WiFi or entertainment, special seat selection or another extra service, you get a refund.
- Refunds must be issued within 7 days.
- You can also get a travel voucher instead of a refund, and it must be useable for up to 5 years from the time it’s issued.
“Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them—without headaches or haggling. Today, our automatic refund rule goes into full effect. Airlines are required to provide prompt cash refunds without passengers having to ask,” Secretary Pete Buttigieg said when the rules took effect in October.
