Gov. Kemp to ask legislature for another $50 million in security grants for GA schools

ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp and the legislature approved a series of one-time security grants to Georgia schools but after the Apalachee High School mass shooting, they plan to approve another $50 million in one-time money.

Four months after the tragic shootings in Barrow County, Kemp stood in the State Capitol on Monday to announce he plans to ask for another $50 million in one-time security grants to every Georgia school.

That $50 million, if approved, would mean a total of $159 million will get allocated in security grants.

The governor’s office says that translates into nearly $69,000 per school for every public school in Georgia.

“All these investments were planned with the goal of making our schools even safer, strengthening mental health support for our students, teachers and faculty,” Kemp said.

Meanwhile, Georgia schools were also on the minds of several Republican senators.

Forsyth County state Sen. Greg Dolezal dropped Senate Bill No. 1 which would ban transgender males from competing against biological females and vice versa.

“It would establish clearly in Georgia law that males are not allowed to compete in female sports,” Dolezal said.

Stone Mountain Democratic Sen. Kim Jackson condemned the new bill as another waste of time when there are more urgent legislative issues.

“Once again, we find the majority party wasting our time attacking vulnerable youth when we could be doing really important work,” Jackson said.

The senate also extended the special investigative committee looking into Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her prosecution of Donald Trump.
