Grocery stores work to keep shelves stocked as metro Atlanta preps for winter storm

ATLANTA — With a winter storm approaching, shoppers have scrambled to grocery stores around metro Atlanta to stock up, while employees work to keep those shelves stocked.

Channel 2′s Candace McCowan was at a Kroger store in northeast Atlanta on Wednesday night speaking to people who were preparing for the approaching storm.

While some were stocking up in anticipation of wintry weather, others were just doing their regular grocery shopping.

“I’m like, wait, where all the turmeric, the asparagus? So I think people are pretty worried,” Will Speights said.

Josh Winters from Michigan made sure he was ready.

“It didn’t look as bad as I thought. I noticed the bread aisle is of course a little empty but a couple of other aisles it seemed like everything was in stock still,” Winters said. “I got some, a couple of water jugs. I got some chips, some saltine crackers, a couple of canned vegetables.”

Tammie Young-Ennaemba with Kroger said they’ve been working to keep shelves stocked for days now. “[We’re] looking at supply opportunities, making sure we have deliveries that are coming in, replenishment plans as well as staffing plans inside the store to make sure we cover the needs of the customer,” she said.

Preparations for the storm also extended to plumbers.

“We’ve gotten a lot more calls of people trying to do preventative maintenance,” Jamaal Davidson with Roto-Rooter said.

He explained that a few dollars spent and some quick steps taken now could save you thousands of dollars in water damage if you can prevent your pipes from freezing.

One thing he recommends is to leave your faucets dripping water.

“That constant kinetic energy will keep that water from freezing but also what you can do is open the cabinets to that fixture and get that warm air from the house in there,” he said.

Knowing where to turn your water valve off if you do have a broken pipe and taking care to insulate your pipes outside of your home, even your water meter, is key.

“You can do like I do, just wrap an old scarf around it with some duct tape and that does the trick too,” he said.

Officials with Kroger ask shoppers to only buy what you need for the next few days so there is enough to go around for everyone.
