ATLANTA — A group gathered Saturday afternoon to show support for a man killed by a police detective.
Protesters marched from English Park on Bolton Road to the public safety annex on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway to rally for Deaundre Phillips.
Phillips was shot and killed outside the public safety annex in northwest Atlanta on Jan. 26.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, two plainclothes detectives arrived at the building around 7 p.m. and saw what appeared to be a suspicious person in a car.
Police said detectives smelled marijuana and approached the car.

Authorities said Phillips attempted to drive off with a detective still partially in the passenger side.
The detective fired his gun at Phillips and he died at the scene.
Police said a gun was recovered from Phillips’ vehicle and he had a lengthy criminal history.
Protesters want to see surveillance video from the incident.
“Just so we can clear up what really happened. It’s on the video tape or at least parts of the videotape,” attorney L. Chris Stewart said.
The GBI is handling the investigation. Officials said they don’t want to compromise the investigation by releasing the video.
Once the GBI wraps up its investigation, it will be turned over to the Fulton County district attorney’s office.
Supporters said there is still more authorities can do.
“Also, we’re asking for the name of the officer who killed Deaundre to be released. We’re just asking for transparency,” said Tiffany Roberts, with Black Lives Matter Atlanta.
Philips’ family said the continued support is helping them while they grieve.
“This is just the beginning because we’re not going to stop until we get some answers,” the victim’s grandmother, Deborah Hall, said.
Supporters plan to demonstrate again at Atlanta City Hall during a public safety committee meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday.
