Housing, transportation among top concerns for Black Georgians, report shows

ATLANTA — A new report from the National Urban League analyzed the state of life for many Black Georgians.

On Tuesday, the National Urban League discussed the report with students from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College.

In the report, Black Georgians were asked: “What was the most important issue facing the state?”

Economic, housing and transportation issues topped the list, followed by education, social justice, health and civic engagement issues.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington spoke with National Urban League President Marc Morial.

“There’s been an incredible movement in Georgia to resist and push back, so we wanted to highlight that in this report not only the challenges we face but the effort to counteract it,” said Morial.

The report also showed that Black people in Georgia are disproportionately affected by life-threatening diseases, such as cancer, asthma and heart disease.

Morehouse College Junior Kalin Bennett is on the autism spectrum. He said better physical and mental health care in the Black community is key.

“Make sure you have a program where nobody is afraid to come to you and talk to you,” Bennett said.

Spelman College student, Raegan Ewing said policing and racial profiling are her biggest concerns.

“It’s still affecting our campus, especially living in Georgia,” said Ewing.

“Black people have accomplished a lot and achieved a lot but there is still a wide disparity,” Morial explained.
