ATLANTA — Hundreds of metro Atlanta military veterans got vaccinated Saturday at a drive-through event near Mercedes Benz Stadium.

The event started at 8 a.m. in the Home Depot Back Yard. The Atlanta VA Healthcare System partnered with the Arthur M. Blank Foundation to provide the COVID-19 vaccines.

All veterans who were currently eligible under Georgia health guidelines can get vaccinated the event. Veterans had to make an appointment in advance and bring a veteran I.D.

Dr. Lance Davis, Deputy Director of the Atlanta VA Healthcare System, said they hoped to do about 1,200 vaccinations at the site Saturday.

“We really thank all of our staff and all of our partners for doing this today,” Davis said. “This is just one more step of getting the vaccine out to veterans.”

The City of Decatur is also hosting a COVID-19 vaccine event for teachers Saturday. The private event was being held at the Doraville MARTA station until 4 p.m.

Gov. Brian Kemp extended eligibility requirements for COVID-19 vaccines to anyone over 55 years old and anyone with a serious medical condition starting on March 15. Kemp opened up vaccines for teachers and other healthcare workers on March 8.
