16-year-old girl killed, 1 injured after graduation party shooting in southwest Atlanta

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating a deadly shooting in southwest Atlanta.

Police told Channel 2 Action News that officers received reports of a person shot outside Benjamin E Mays High School in southwest Atlanta just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old girl who had been shot. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner said 16-year-old Bre’asia Powell was the victim.

A little later, officers said a 16-year-old boy checked himself into the hospital with a gunshot wound. Police determined that it was from the same incident. His identity has not been released.

According to the investigation, the incident stemmed from a confrontation at a graduation party earlier that night.

Police have not said if anyone has been taken into custody or if there are any other victims.

A spokesperson from Atlanta Public Schools said in a statement to Channel 2 Action News:

Early Sunday morning, two teenagers were shot during an unauthorized gathering at the end of the exiting driveway at Benjamin E. Mays High School. One is deceased and one is being treated at a local hospital. At the request of Atlanta Public Schools Police, the Atlanta Police Department is leading the investigation due to their access to more extensive investigative resources. Even during summer break, the safety and well-being of our students and employees remain a top priority for Atlanta Public Schools.

The investigation remains ongoing.
