Channel 2′s Heather Catlin joined a group of skilled professionals on a mission, to make sure other organizations can thrive.

The nonprofit is called 48in48 and it’s based in Atlanta.

It comprises skilled marketing and technology professionals who build websites for other nonprofits, which allows them to concentrate on giving back to the community.

Websites are important. But some nonprofits don’t have the money or resources to spend on them. This is where 48in48 comes into play.

“Our mission is to mobilize skills-based volunteers to build 48 websites in 48 hours for non-profits that don’t have the resources or funding that can do that,” Sima Parekh, 48in48′s executive director said.

Parekh said that some of the volunteers are the best in the marketing and technology world.

Nonprofits apply for help and the volunteers build the websites. But he said they also teach the nonprofits’ leaders about marketing and branding.

“We give them a full package of things. Skill-based volunteers from our communities come to the event and give sessions for free,” Parekh said.

Carrisa Jones is a recipient of a 48in48 website. She started Every Girl Shines, which pairs middle and high school girls with female professionals who act as mentors.

“I had a team of five or six people helping with the website and they were giving me ideas.”

Parekh said what the experts bring to each website is valued at around $25,000. Leaders like Jones get it for free.

“It’s a total relief. When you’re doing work in the community you’re focused on the service and the things you’re doing and the other administrative stuff is secondary,” Jones said.

Parekh told Caitlin that 48in48 wants to improve its digital footprint so its volunteers can go out and do what they do best.

This year, 48in48 is going to dedicate four weekends to building websites. It’s been doing this for seven years now helping more than 900 nonprofits around the world.
