Man dead following shooting involving police officer inside Buckhead restaurant

ATLANTA — Atlanta police said a man is dead after he was shot by a police officer inside a Buckhead restaurant.

Atlanta police were called out the scene along Lenox Road around 3 p.m.

Police and witnesses described the incident to Channel 2 investigative reporter Justin Gray as an extended struggle over the police officer’s gun.

Investigators said the officer was working off-duty at an approved job in the area when he was called to the Roasters restaurant.

The officer was called in because of an issue with a man inside the restaurant, and the struggle took place afterward.

“There was some discussion going on and immediately there was a struggle. The struggle involved the officer’s gun. The struggle went on for several minutes. At the conclusion of that struggle, the officer discharged his firearm,” Atlanta Deputy Police Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said.

A witness told Gray that the man took the officer’s gun.

“The guy took the officer’s gun, but he gave the gun back to the officer. He was tussling with the man and the man flipped the gun on him. The man was tussling with the officer’s gun. And he (the officer) shot him five times,” the witness said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries, but he later died. The officer was not injured in the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to look into the shooting.
