ATLANTA — A man wanted for rape and other crimes across the metro area has surrendered.

DNA evidence connected Melton Chapman to the sexual assault of a woman in her 20s in 1989.

Chapman is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning. We have a reporter and photographer in the courtroom and will bring you updates on Channel 2 Action News at Noon.

After the story aired on Channel 2 Action News, Chapman turned himself in at Atlanta police headquarters hours later.

“If it wasn’t for the story, I don’t think we would have been able to find him anytime soon,” Detective Ronald Sluss said.

Detectives hope the victim can have closure with the arrest.

“She was happy that we were able to figure out who did it to give her more closure,” Sluss said.

Police said the victim was sexually assaulted at the Bowen Homes on June 22, 1989.

“I didn’t get a sense of remorse of what he did,” Sluss said.

Chapman has been charged with rape.

Police said this is still an open investigation as they try to determine if he is linked to any other sexual assaults in the metro area.
