Atlanta Mayor-elect Andre Dickens tests positive for COVID-19

ATLANTA — Atlanta Mayor-elect Andre Dickens has tested positive for COVID-19.

“Today, I tested positive for COVID-19 with a rapid test and am waiting the results of a PCR test,” Dickens said in a tweet. “I am feeling well and have mild symptoms.”

Dickens said he was also fully vaccinated against the virus.

The mayor-elect said he is unsure where he was exposed to the virus but urged people to get tested if they feel they have been in contact with anyone with the virus.

On Monday, the Department of Public Health said there were more than 7,700 new cases of COVID-19 across the state throughout the weekend.

DPH confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that there are 25 confirmed cases of the omicron variant in Georgia. The department also warned that number is likely much higher because of people who have no symptoms.

Federal officials confirmed Monday that the omicron variant has become the dominant strain of COVID-19 now in the country, making up 73% of all cases.

Dickens said he looks forward to rejoining everyone after he tests negative for the virus.

“Thank you for your prayers and well wishes,” he said in his tweet.

He also urged everyone to “stay safe this holiday season.”
