Metro Atlanta families with strong ties to Gaza reflect on past 15 months of war

ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta is home to families whose loved ones are caught in the danger of the war in Gaza.

Ghada Elnajjar and her husband Nidal Ibrahim said they have lost 120 family members since the fighting escalated in October 2023.

“Even the ones who did survive this, the attacks on their homes have destroyed everything that they have. They’re displaced right now. They are living without homes. They’ve lost their memories,” Elnajjar told Channel 2′s Courtney Francisco.

“They just shuffle back and forth between refugee camp and refugee camp with the idea that some of these areas are supposed to be safe zones,” Ibrahim said.

The Asarnow family has been praying for a truce from Marietta.

“Praying for peace, for this to end, that when a negotiation happens, that it’s going to go through,” David Asarnow said.

His son, Josh, moved to Israel and joined the military months before the October attacks.

“These people are going to need a lot of help. They’re going to need a lot of support,” Asarnow said.

Both families hope the ceasefire holds and aid can move through the region.

“We hope, immediately, we’re going to see a huge influx of water and food and supplies,” Ibrahim said.

His wife said if this ceasefire holds, rebuilding can begin.

“That will take years,” Elnajjar said.
