United Way 211 leaders told Channel 2′s Fred Blankenship that the service offers 3,500 different services and programs to callers who need food, shelter, mental health services, and more.
Community Connection Specialist Laketa Yearby said she understands the uniqueness of working the call center better than most, thanks to her emotional connection with the service.

“Back in 2015, I was homeless,” Yearby said. “We lost our place. So just trying to find resources, find help. And I remembered United Way, and I had to make that first call. Put your pride aside because that was the first thing no one ever imagines being homeless.”
Yearby has come full circle. She’s now the calm, compassionate voice callers hear when seeking help.

“It may be difficult; you may be embarrassed. There is no judgment here at 211. None at all,” she said. “We’ve all been through something in life. Everyone has a story. So no judgments. Pick up the phone, make that call and get the help that you deserve and that you need.”
