ATLANTA — Changes to how you ride electric scooters could go into effect soon.

One of the changes would prohibit riding scooters on the sidewalks, just like bikes and cars. City leaders are set to vote on new rules on Monday.

Pedestrians like the idea, but scooter riders, not so much.

Another possible change includes limiting riders to only one person per scooter.

"I see why people do it. I don't think it's safe for pedestrians," Jessica Florez said.

Florez said the mobile scooters can be fun, but they can also be a nuisance.

There could be new fees and fines for scooter companies if they block the curb cuts for wheelchairs and are not parked out of the way for pedestrians. Since the scooters rolled into Atlanta in June, city leaders have received hundreds of complaints.

Channel 2 Action News even found a video on YouTube showing someone riding a scooter on the Downtown Connector.

The new rules also suggest riders wear a helmet.

"No one is going to wear a helmet, because no one is going to carry around a helmet all day. This is just something you see and pick up," rider Daniel Bondi said.

Councilman Dustin Hillis said the new rules will also force the city to look at creating more bike lanes for multimodal transportation. If the council passes the new rules, they will go into effect Monday evening.
