Man injured after tree falls on him, police say

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating after someone was injured after a tree fell on them.

It happened along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive around 4 p.m. Friday.

Investigators said the victim is a 56-year-old man.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones spoke with a friend of the man who said they heard a loud crack right before the tree fell.

“We panicked. It was one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever heard. And we weren’t sure where it was coming from. So I balled up to protect my head. And I saw briefly as a tree was falling, and he was stumbling in the direction where it was falling,” Thomas Lecky said. “He was conscious, and alert and he was trying to get up.”

Police said the man was treated at the scene by a Grady ambulance.

Leckie said the wind was whipping really bad when the tree came down.

“It was literally gale force winds. It seemed like he was terrified,” Lecky said. “It blew the limb right off the tree and luckily no one lost their lives.”
