Neighbors say stretch of MLK Jr. Drive where deadly crash happened is dangerous

ATLANTA — Police are looking into the cause of a deadly crash involving two cars in a nearly head-on collision.

The driver of one of the cars died on the scene, while two passengers in the other car had to be rushed to the hospital.

People who live and work near the crash site say drivers speed on the road all the time, even though the speed limit is just 35 miles per hour.

Neighbors say there is also a curve that makes it hard to see oncoming traffic, and whether it factored into the deadly crash today isn’t yet known.

The crash happened right outside of Asmi Waldu’s store, when a Ford Focus and a Toyota Corolla collided mid-morning on Monday.

“It’s so sad, very sad in the early morning to hear the bad news,” Waldu said. “It’s really sad.”

Police say the driver of the Corolla, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died on the scene.

Two people in the Ford Focus were injured and rushed to Grady Hospital.

“They need to fix this road,” Waldu said. “I don’t know how they do it, but it’s really dangerous.”

Waldu and others who live and work nearby say accidents are common and often the result of speed, even though police have not said whether speed was a factor in the deadly crash.

“Very dangerous, and besides the curb, coming through the curve, people are doing 60, 70, 75 miles per hour,” Joe Sphegeer told Channel 2 Action News. He said drivers can’t see ahead on the curve.

Neighbors said they want a reconfiguration of the road and a crackdown on speeding to stop what they say is a blind curve.

“This curve right there? It’s a deadly curve,” neighbor Tommy Stroud said. “When I hit that curve, I always go slow and just creep around it. You don’t know if someone is going to be in your lane or stuck on the street.”

Police have not yet identified the driver who was killed, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
