ATLANTA — Channel 2′s Richard Elliot spoke exclusively to President Donald Trump about coronavirus, Georgia’s reopening plan and the steps his administration is taking to rebuild America’s infrastructure.
Trump visited Atlanta Wednesday for a speech at the UPS Hub in Hapeville, where he spoke about infrastructure projects and policy.
After his speech, he spoke with Elliot, who had to get a negative COVID-19 test before he was able to ask the president questions.
During the 1-on-1 interview, Trump praised Gov. Kemp’s reopening plan, just months after expressing some worry that Georgia reopened too early.
Trump has asked for additional federal aid and supplies.
“Well we’re working with your governor Brian,” Trump said. “We’re working with him very much and we’re going to be helping Georgia a lot as we have been. It’s a special place, great people and they’ve done really well, really well with the virus and with every other thing. They’ve really done an incredible job.”
Trump also praised Georgia’s plan to reopen schools.
“We want the schools open, and Georgia’s been a great example of a state that’s done it all right,” Trump said.
Georgia has seen a recent surge of coronavirus cases, and Gov. Kemp said Tuesday that he has no plans to move forward with more re-openings.
Trump said children handle the virus better than adults.
“We do want to get our schools open. There’s virtually no impact to on children,” Trump said. “They’re just stronger than we are. Their immune system or whatever it may be, but we want the schools open.”
