ATLANTA — That is what happened when a pipe burst inside a luxury high-rise building in downtown Atlanta.
Now a major cleanup is underway.

Water poured down the stairwell into dozens of homes on West Peachtree Street. Because of this, Channel 2′s Tom Regan learned from residents that the elevators had to be shut down because of the water.
One resident told Channel 2 today that the elevators in his high-rise are back up and running and that cleaning crews had been there the last couple of days removing water, drying carpets and floors.
But a former president of the homeowners association told us it could have been a lot worse.
It’s not what you want to see when you step into the stairwell of your luxury high-rise and have water cascading like a river.

The cause?
A broken pipe in the stairwell that provides water to the sprinkler system.
“One of the fire suppression pipes burst and it was in a stairwell, so the water that’s coming out of the building is directly coming down that stairwell, said Sean Martin, former HOA president.
Martin told Channel 2 the pipe burst around 8 p.m. Saturday for nearly an hour.
He said water spewed out until firefighters and building engineers were able to turn it off.
His home wasn’t affected, but dozens of other units experienced some water damage, but not as bad as you think when you look at the video.
“With any type of water burst or water pipe burst in a building or in a residential home that causes water damage within the building, affected some homeowners here at the building. However, nothing to the point of being catastrophic by any means,” Martin said.
He said no one lost water or power and everyone is pulling together to get back to normal.

“Our homeowners association management company has a phenomenal job sort of trying to keep everyone comfortable if you will,” Martin said. “Our elevators start coming back into service today, so that’s no longer having to come up and down the stairs.”
Channel 2 reached out to the company that manages this high-rise but they told me they would have no comment.
