Rumors that Rep. John Lewis has died are false, spokesman says

ATLANTA — Rep. John Lewis has not died, despite rumors circulating on social media, according to our partners at the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and ajc.com.

“It’s only rumors,” Lewis’ chief of staff, Michael Collins, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He is resting comfortably at home.”

Channel 2 Anchor Jovita Moore also spoke to a spokesperson for Lewis, who said he “is fine.”

Rumors that the Atlanta civil rights leader had died exploded on Twitter Saturday afternoon. U.S. Rep. Alma Adams of North Carolina and a blog on historically black colleges & universities were among those who tweeted that Lewis had died.

Adams has since deleted the tweet and issued an apology.

Lewis, 80, is in treatment for advanced stage pancreatic cancer.
