Sinkhole opens up in the middle of Atlanta neighborhood

ATLANTA — Residents of one Atlanta neighborhood now have an obstacle to maneuver around as they drive down the road.

A large sinkhole opened up Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Ira St. and Gardner St. in southwest Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News has reached out to the City of Atlanta’s Public Works department to see if they have determined why it popped up, but has not heard back.

Some neighbors say they believe downpours of rain on Saturday could be behind the sink hole.

“[The rain] was very intense,” neighbor Jose Henry said. “I was actually out working last night when it was coming down and I barely could see.”

Details have not been released on when neighbors could expect the sink hole to be fixed, but residents hope it’s soon.

“There is a lot of traffic that comes through this area, and it’s always been that way,” Henry said.
