Southwest Atlanta Kroger shut down by copper theft to reopen before Christmas

A southwest Atlanta Kroger had to abruptly close after copper thieves vandalized it, causing extensive damage.

ATLANTA — A southwest Atlanta Kroger that had to abruptly close when copper thieves vandalized it and caused extensive damage is expected to reopen next week.

It happened at the Kroger on Metropolitan Parkway near Cleveland Avenue just before Thanksgiving.

Atlanta police confirmed Wednesday that once the thieves were inside, they did extensive damage to the building after stealing copper from its electrical system.

The store has been closed down after the theft, leaving many concerned about where they would get their food and medications from.

For the people who use the PNC Bank branch inside of the store, the bank set up a mobile banking center in the parking lot.

Representatives with Kroger released a statement on Thursday saying they will be opening the store sooner than they expected.

“Our team has been working hard to repair the damage and reopen the store as soon as possible to help serve the community during the holidays. We are very excited that we will be able to open sooner than expected due to the dedication of our team and the patience and understanding of the community. Current plans are to open the store next week. We will provide more details in the coming days,” the statement read.

Kroger representatives have not commented on an exact date for it to reopen.
