ATLANTA — You could soon have to pay more to ride Uber and Lyft if a proposal to charge customers sales tax becomes a reality.

The state's proposal would add 4 percent to the the ride and each city would add its own taxes.

For example in Atlanta, after paying for your ride, you would be hit with an 8.9 percent sales tax.

"I think that's a horrible idea. It's just going to raise prices for everyone who has to ride Uber or Lyft," Katie Lauver said.

An Uber spokesperson told Channel 2 Action News that they don't mind paying something for ride-sharing, but a sales tax will add too much to fares.

State representative Jay Powell is the sponsor of the bill. He was unavailable for an interview Wednesday.

The bill would still have to make its way through the House and the Senate.
