Man in critical condition after being shot by Atlanta officer, GBI says

ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling an officer-involved shooting that happened in southwest Atlanta.

We first reported the shooting as breaking news Saturday on the Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat at 11 p.m. 

The GBI said officers responded to a house in the 2000 block of Hapeville Road around 9 p.m. Saturday.

They arrived and found a man sitting on the front porch with a handgun.

As officers approached, the man ran and officers chased him. During the chase, an Atlanta police officer fired his gun, shooting the man.

The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where the GBI said he was in critical condition as of Sunday morning.

No officers were hurt during the shooting. They recovered a handgun at the scene.

The GBI is working to determine what occurred at the time of the shooting.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review, the GBI said.
