Police said Antonio Bell and Michael Thomas kicked in a door at an apartment on Saturday afternoon.
The resident called police to say that someone was attempting to break in.
The first responding officer saw that the door had been kicked in, and he was shot in the hallway as he arrived, according to police.
The officer fired back and shot Thomas at least twice.
Police said the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, which they credit with saving his life.
