ATLANTA — With the film industry back in full-swing following the pandemic shutdown, Hollywood returned to Georgia in a big way, filming some of the biggest hits of the year right in our own state. Here is a look at the top movies that were filmed in the Peach State throughout 2021:

Spider-Man: No Way Home

With Spider-Man’s identity now revealed, Peter asks Doctor Strange for help. When a spell goes wrong, dangerous foes from other worlds start to appear, forcing Peter to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

On top of filming locations in Iceland, Los Angeles and New York City, parts of the film were shot in the city of Atlanta as well as Trilith Studios (formally known as Pinewood Studios).

Red Notice

An FBI profiler pursuing the world’s most wanted art thief becomes his reluctant partner in crime to catch an elusive crook who’s always one step ahead.

While much of the movie was filmed across parts of Europe, parts of “Red Notice” were also filmed here in Georgia. The Russian prison scenes were shot at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Since posting in late September, “Red Notice” has become Netflix’s most-watched movie of all-time.

Jungle Cruise

Take a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. The unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.

On top of filming locations in Hawaii, scenes from “Jungle Cruise” were also shot in Atlanta.

Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

While much of the movie takes place in western Europe, scenes from “Black Widow” were shot in Macon, Rome and Atlanta.

The Suicide Squad

Supervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Scenes from the movie were shot in Augusta as well as Trilith Studios (formally known as Pinewood Studios).

The Tomorrow War

A family man is drafted to fight in a future war where the fate of humanity relies on his ability to confront the past.

Scenes from this movie were shot at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, as well as at Graves Mountain and Jekyll Island.

Dear Evan Hansen

Film adaptation of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical about Evan Hansen, a high school senior with Social Anxiety disorder and his journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate.

This movie had scenes shot in Ellijay at BJ Reese Orchards, Atlanta, and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School in Fayetteville.

Respect

Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, “Respect” is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.
