ATLANTA — Former President Donald Trump is coming to Georgia this weekend to throw his support behind one of Brian Kemp’s challengers in the race for governor.
“We’re going to support a great gentleman, a great candidate. He’s running for governor -- David Perdue,” Trump said in a video recording to Georgia previewing his rally.
Channel 2′s Richard Elliot spoke one on one with Perdue outside the State Capitol Friday.
He says he appreciates Trump’s endorsement and believes the former president will encourage Republicans to get out and vote.
“A lot of people got disillusioned by the election process and didn’t come back out to vote. So what we’re doing now with President Trump is making sure that they know that’s not acceptable this time,” Perdue said.

Elliot also spoke with Kemp in Cobb County.
Recent polls show Kemp still has a lead over Perdue. He says only one endorsement matters to him.
“I can’t control what other people are doing. I’m looking for the endorsement of the voters on May 24 and then again in November, and that’s what I’m staying focused on,” Kemp said.
While both Republicans criticize each other, they are also attacking Democrat Stacey Abrams.
Sunday, she held her own virtual rally with Atlanta-born comedian Kenan Thompson where she talked about why she’s running for governor.
“We are running for governor, and I use we intentionally. This is about one Georgia. This is about the 10 million plus Georgians who are feeling the pain of COVID, the pain of injustice, the pain of the last four years,” Abrams said.
Trump’s rally is Saturday night in Commerce. Georgia Democrats are planning their own virtual rally for Friday morning.
